Organisation overview:

Renaisi is an award-winning social enterprise, supporting people and places to thrive. We are dedicated to supporting disadvantaged communities and are unusual in being a frontline delivery organisation, as well as a research and evaluation consultancy.

Our team has 17 years’ experience of supporting charities, social enterprises, community groups, local authorities and funders, specialising in evaluations and impact management advice. We work with organisations at all stages of development, from small start-ups to large multi-million pound funds. Our team of researchers and analysts are experienced in supporting organisations to develop the impact management systems they need to generate good quality data, and use it well.

We can support you with all stages of impact management, including Theory of Change development and implementation; outcomes frameworks; quantitative and qualitative measures; process mapping and systems development; and data analysis. Our team has a range of subject expertise and we work across all areas of the social sector.

Case study 1: City Year

Sector:

Focus of project:

  • Programme design / theory of change facilitation
  • Developing impact plans
  • Performance management
  • Data management & analysis
  • Culture change

In 2015 we completed a process evaluation of the City Year UK programme across 20 schools. This was designed to understand how to replicate and support the effective delivery of that model, and to highlight the conditions of success.
During the year, we conducted intensive research into the experiences of teachers, pupils, mentors and schools as a whole, with a combination of structured observation, in-depth interviews, surveys and workshops. This enabled us to build a comprehensive picture of what types of work City Year delivered at every level as well as the outcomes experienced by stakeholders. We also conducted a thorough review of City Year's existing impact data, to map how value is created by the organisation, and to identify gaps in their knowledge.
Using our findings, we supported City Year through a strategic planning process which led to a significant restructure of the organisation to facilitate improvements in its delivery. This involved a new management structure for teams, and a new level of staff being created in the organisation to rigorously monitor impact and maintain strong accountability to schools.
These models have been recognised by the organisation as a crucial part of their ongoing success and ability to deliver quality programmes with schools. We have since been re-commissioned by the organisation for additional projects.

Case study 2: North and South London Cares

Sector:

Focus of project:

  • Programme design / theory of change facilitation
  • Developing impact plans
  • Performance management
  • Data management & analysis
  • Leadership development
  • Culture change
  • Building impact measurement tools
  • Reviewing external evidence

Renaisi helped North and South London Cares to carry out an impact evaluation to demonstrate how the charities meet their core objectives of reducing isolation and loneliness amongst older people (and young professionals). The NLSC model was a new approach to social action, with a strong emphasis on local community and mutual support.
We designed a Theory of Change for the organisation based on extensive research into best practice on isolation and loneliness, as well as a review of existing outcomes frameworks and surveys. This Theory of Change included outcomes with existing validated indicators as well as some that were bespoke to NSLC and were better able to reflect their innovative approach. This has enabled the team to benchmark some of their outcomes, whilst remaining faithful to the unique design of their intervention.
To ensure the longevity of our work, we developed a manual with the team which explained the organisation's approach to impact management. Alongside this, we created a process manual to codify elements of delivery and map different areas of impact data onto relevant operational areas. As a result of our evaluation, NLSC have significantly moved forwards in their thinking on the purpose of their work, and have strong evidence and research on which to base future decisions about programme design and delivery.

Case study 3: Carers UK

Sector:

Focus of project:

  • Programme design / theory of change facilitation
  • Developing impact plans
  • Data management & analysis
  • Developing new products and services
  • Culture change
  • Building impact measurement tools

Renaisi recently completed a large, eighteen month process and impact evaluation of Carers UK’s national volunteering programme. The aims were to demonstrate the value of the volunteering programme on carers, assess the effectiveness of the current measurement and evaluation framework and explore how sustainable the current volunteer programme is to make recommendations around the scaling of the programme.
During this project, we drew together eight sets of both qualitative and quantitative data to demonstrate the outcomes of the programme as well as the cost of each volunteer to the programme per year. Our methods included a comprehensive analysis of the Theory of Change and current monitoring tools and mechanisms, development of surveys, analysis of financial data, focus groups and in-depth interviews with staff, volunteers and 40 carers to explore their experience of the service.
Renaisi developed a comprehensive measurement framework for Carers UK to assess the future impact of the programme. This will be used in conjunction with the final report to make organisational decisions to further develop the volunteering programme, and to improve the standard of evidence regarding the impact of the programme on beneficiaries.
