Mutual Ventures is a socially-focused consultancy with extensive experience of working with VCSEs across various sectors to develop their commercial skills in order to become sustainable organisations.
We offer a range of impact management support including:

We also support organisations with contract and investment readiness support, strategy development, service redesign, financial modelling, process improvement and leadership coaching to embed culture change.

Our approach is to work collaboratively with our clients to co-design packages of support. We are committed to ensure that learning is fully embedded within the organisation so they build their own capacity and capability to use our tools and methodologies long after our support ends.

Case study 1: Devon Youth Service

We supported Devon Youth Service (DYS) to ‘spin out’ of Devon County Council (DCC) and establish as a Public Service Mutual (PSM) in February 2017. DYS had a robust approach to measuring the impact of specific services on young people but no mechanisms for assessing or communicating the cumulative impact of their services. We supported DYS to build and embed an overarching social impact strategy for the new organisation. This included reviewing their existing Theory of Change and evidence frameworks for existing services and working with frontline staff to develop an overall Theory of Change. An evidence framework was developed to measure the outcomes in the Theory of Change, building on data already gathered by DYS. Subsequently DYS received the Standard of Evidence level 2: Indication of Impact, placing them in the top 25% of all services audited nationally. DYS has since been awarded a contract to deliver youth services by DCC and established successfully as DYS Space (an independent PSM).

Case study 2: PossAbilities

Mutual Ventures supported PossAbilities to spin-out of Rochdale Council in April 2014. Since then (via ICRF funding), we have continued to support PossAbilities to develop and grow sustainably through becoming contract ready. Our support included: reviewing their tendering process and bidding for specific opportunities, developing a social impact measurement approach and developing a new management information system (including the creation of a data management dashboard). Since our support, PossAbilities has won a £6.5m contract, which increased their turnover by circa 50%. The Care Quality Commission also recently rated the service as “outstanding”, putting it in the top 1% of providers nationally.

Case study 3: Community Dental Services

Mutual Ventures were selected to provide contract readiness support to Community Dental Services (CDS). We co-designed a social impact measurement tool following Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology to capture relevant outcomes to present to commissioners, funders and wider stakeholders. Mutual Ventures worked with the team to develop the CDS team’s SROI skills with emphasis on maximising its impact in tender responses. We then supported the team through a bid process, providing market analysis support and constructive commentary on key bid sections. Following our work, CDS secured a 2-year contract with Leicestershire County Council worth £428k. We continued to work with CDS and produced a social impact report for another existing contract. Ongoing communication with the team has identified that the organisation has been successful in 3 out of 4 contracts that they have actively competed in post our support.
